Both cylindrical and rectangular 2MMBtu/hr (.59 MW) boiler and process heater simulation test facilities are available. The cylindrical furnace, illustrated on this page, has an external water spray cooling system, to vary heat extraction and simulate various full-scale system temperature profiles. This unit simulates both the temperature profile and gas residence times experienced in typical firetube boilers. The rectangular furnace uses a combination of refractory lining and water-cooled tubes to simulate full-scale system temperature profiles for watertube boilers and process heaters.

These facilities have been validated by comparing conventional burner emissions and temperatures achieved in these facilities to those measured at full-scale facilities. These facilities are equipped with computer controlled temperature, flow and emissions monitoring systems. Fuels include gaseous (e.g. natural gas), liquid (e.g. No. 1 distillate) and solid (e.g. pulverized coal or biomass solids). Several low emissions burners have been successfully developed in these test facilities.
