In addition to gas and solid fuels powered systems, Altex has expertise in liquid fueled burners. Using modeling tools and experience, Altex has been able to design and test small liquid fuel burners, which reliably operate on diesel and JP-8 (kerosene) fuels, at capacities less than 600 watts. These burners use a novel Porous Surface Element (PSE) approach, combined with combustion air distribution screens, to produce blue flames that have been shown to operate reliably over nearly 1000 hours. An example of a PSE flame is shown on the right.

Given the consistency of operation, it is expected that burners would last for many thousands of hours. In contrast, typical small liquid fuel burners will plug and stop operating within 20 hours. The novel PSE approach has been used on burners for soldier canteen cup water heating, thermoelectric generators and providing heat for minature steam reformers. In addition to these small burners, Altex has developed much larger low NOx and high air preheat liquid fueled burners.
